[3:12]  1 tn Or “men married only once,” “devoted solely to their wives” (see the note on “wife” in 1 Tim 3:2; also 1 Tim 5:9; Titus 1:6).

[18:19]  2 tn Heb “For I have known him.” The verb יָדַע (yada’) here means “to recognize and treat in a special manner, to choose” (see Amos 3:2). It indicates that Abraham stood in a special covenantal relationship with the Lord.

[18:19]  3 tn Heb “and they will keep.” The perfect verbal form with vav consecutive carries on the subjective nuance of the preceding imperfect verbal form (translated “so that he may command”).

[18:19]  4 tn The infinitive construct here indicates manner, explaining how Abraham’s children and his household will keep the way of the Lord.

[18:19]  5 tn Heb “bring on.” The infinitive after לְמַעַן (lÿmaan) indicates result here.

[18:19]  6 tn Heb “spoke to.”

[24:15]  7 tn Heb “if it is bad in your eyes.”

[24:15]  8 tn Or “to serve.”

[24:15]  9 tn Or “will serve.”

[24:15]  10 tn Heb “your fathers.”

[24:15]  11 tn Or “served.”

[24:15]  12 tn Heb “the river,” referring to the Euphrates. This has been specified in the translation for clarity; see v. 3.

[24:15]  13 tn Heb “house.”

[24:15]  14 tn Or “will serve.”

[101:2]  15 tn Heb “take notice of.”

[101:2]  16 tn Heb “I will walk about in the integrity of my heart in the midst of my house.”

[101:3]  17 tn Heb “I will not set before my eyes a thing of worthlessness.”

[101:3]  18 tn Heb “the doing of swerving [deeds] I hate.” The Hebrew term סֵטִים (setim) is probably an alternate spelling of שֵׂטִים (setim), which appears in many medieval Hebrew mss. The form appears to be derived from a verbal root שׂוּט (sut, “to fall away; to swerve”; see Ps 40:4).

[101:3]  19 tn Heb “it [i.e., the doing of evil deeds] does not cling to me.”

[101:4]  20 tn Heb “a perverse heart will turn aside from me.” The adjective עִקֵּשׁ (’iqqesh) has the basic nuance “twisted; crooked” and by extension refers to someone or something that is morally perverse (see Ps 18:26). It appears frequently in the Book of Proverbs, where it is used of evil people (22:5), speech (8:8; 19:1), thoughts (11:20; 17:20), and life styles (2:15; 28:6).

[101:4]  21 tn Heb “know.” The king will not willingly allow perverse individuals to remain in his royal court.

[101:5]  22 tn Heb “[one who has] pride of eyes and wideness [i.e., arrogance] of heart, him I will not endure.”

[101:6]  23 tn Heb “my eyes [are] on the faithful of the land.”

[101:6]  24 tn The Hebrew text simply reads, “in order to live with me.”

[101:6]  25 tn Heb “one who walks in the way of integrity, he will minister to me.”

[101:7]  26 tn Heb “he will not live in the midst of my house, one who does deceit.”

[101:7]  27 tn Heb “one who speaks lies will not be established before my eyes.”

[10:2]  28 tn In the Greek text this represents a continuation of the previous sentence. Because of the tendency of contemporary English to use shorter sentences, a new sentence was begun here in the translation.

[10:2]  29 sn The description of Cornelius as a devout, God-fearing man probably means that he belonged to the category called “God-fearers,” Gentiles who worshiped the God of Israel and in many cases kept the Mosaic law, but did not take the final step of circumcision necessary to become a proselyte to Judaism. See further K. G. Kuhn, TDNT 6:732-34, 43-44, and Sir 11:17; 27:11; 39:27.

[10:2]  30 tn Or “gave many gifts to the poor.” This was known as “giving alms,” or acts of mercy (Sir 7:10; BDAG 315-16 s.v. ἐλεημοσύνη).

[1:6]  31 tn Grk “if anyone is blameless…” as a continuation of v. 5b, beginning to describe the elder’s character.

[1:6]  32 tn Or “married only once,” “devoted solely to his wife.” See the note on “wife” in 1 Tim 3:2; also 1 Tim 3:12; 5:9.

[1:6]  33 tn Or “believing children.” The phrase could be translated “believing children,” but the parallel with 1 Tim 3:4 (“keeping his children in control”) argues for the sense given in the translation.
